A few decades ago, answering the question “can you live without technology?” was not always so cut and dried. Technology was a wonderful thing and seemed to be on the path towards almost complete automation of our lives, and therefore the ability to live without it would seem naive and almost backward.
But, of course, things are not so simple in today’s world. Technology has become almost ubiquitous and almost inescapable. Almost all of us have been affected by technology at one time or another. Our phones are full of features and options that we never thought existed. Our televisions show programs and movies that are made possible by the latest technology, and we are constantly online, log on to the Internet for everything from checking our emails to interacting with our social networks.
If you ask me, the answer is a resounding “yes.” I believe that technology has helped make our lives easier and more convenient and has also created many opportunities as well. And yet, some people argue against the idea that technology has positively contributed to our society. They point out that most of the world is stuck in poverty, and that life is generally boring these days.
Such an argument seems harsh and unrealistic. What if you could find a way to live without technology? If you could somehow get around some of the most basic services and applications of technology, wouldn’t that be great? Wouldn’t it be a lot better than what we have right now?
Fortunately, I believe that technology has helped lift people out of poverty and has given them access to some of the most basic services. But, even with all of this, some argue that things could be much worse. For example, how would you feel about health care if you could not afford it? There would be no one around to help you, and you would end up dying before you would ever find the best solution.
But is this your choice, and does it have to be this way? What if you had an answer as to how you would be able to afford the very best health care, at the lowest cost? Would you be happier and healthier as a result? The truth is that you could be a healthy individual who owns his or her own home, has time for friends and family, and avoids enormous amounts of debt. It just takes some imagination.
This is exactly what I believe is possible, and technology is the key. I believe that there is a way to combine the efficiencies of technology with personal responsibility and a sense of social responsibility. I believe that the answer lies in something like Open Source. With Open Source, we allow software developers the ability to create software solutions to real problems. Once the software is developed, the system is available to anyone who wants to take advantage of it.
If you are asking yourself, can you live without technology? The answer is a resounding yes! You might even come up with some of your own!
One way to look at Open Source is to think of it as an “open” approach. What this means is that to use the solution, you do not have to be an expert in the technology. The more knowledgeable you are about the technology, the more benefit you will see from having access to it.
Another way to look at Open Source is to look at it as the integration of two very important concepts into one. For technology to be useful, it must be useful to the user. After all, technology is a tool that enhances human life. Without technology, life could simply be as it is. People could still go to work, have a social life, and do whatever they need to do.
The final way to look at Open Source is to look at it as a way of looking at, and even creating, new technologies. Some many applications and tools exist which were not originally developed by large companies, governments, or academic institutions. And while these technologies may not be immediately useful (they may still require some fine-tuning), there is a lot of potential for them because of their ability to help the user in a specific area.
So, the final answer to the question, “could you live without technology?” could be a resounding YES! With Open Source, technology becomes readily available to the user in a freely build and modify the environment. It also allows the user to customize it, to make it better, more useful, and perhaps most importantly, cost-free. So, if you’re interested in improving your home, your business, or anything else, consider using Open Source.
